Mili-Microbubbler MM05 and a regular plastic pump for a used skimmer body

Bubble generation principle
Fine-bubble nozzle skimmer

A high-velocity water jet passes through a specially engineered nozzle where:

water accelerates through a narrow orifice,
air is entrained through pressure reduction or an external air supply,
turbulence and cavitation shear the air into fine microbubbles.

Unlike a needle-wheel, there are no rotating parts involved in bubble formation

Needle-wheel skimmer

A pump draws in air and mechanically chops it into thousands of fine bubbles using a rotating impeller fitted with pins or mesh.

Bubble size

This is where a high-quality fine-bubble nozzle can excel.

Typical ranges:

Needle-wheel

  • 80–300 μm

Fine-bubble nozzle

  • 30–150 μm

Advantages of finer bubbles:

  • larger interfacial surface area,
  • slower rise velocity,
  • longer contact time,
  • increased adsorption of dissolved organic compounds.

A caveat is that not all nozzles achieve these sizes consistently. Performance depends strongly on nozzle geometry, operating pressure, and air-to-water ratio.

Bubble uniformity

Fine-bubble nozzles often produce a more uniform bubble cloud because there is no rotating impeller introducing periodic variations.

This can provide:

  • a more stable foam head,
  • steadier skimming,
  • fewer large "escape" bubbles.

Mechanical complexity

Fine-bubble nozzle

Advantages:

  • no needle wheel,
  • no ceramic shaft,
  • no rotating bubble generator,
  • no impeller balancing issues.

The only rotating component is the circulation pump.

Needle-wheel

Requires:

  • precision impeller,
  • ceramic shaft,
  • bearings,
  • volute optimization.

Over time, impellers can wear or become damaged by calcium deposits, sand, or debris.

Reliability

Fine-bubble nozzle

Excellent.

Potential issues are mainly:

  • nozzle clogging,
  • calcium buildup,
  • salt creep.

There are few components that wear.

Needle-wheel

Generally reliable, but the impeller is a consumable part over the long term.

Bubble stability

Because nozzle-generated bubbles are highly uniform, they can form:

  • dense foam columns,
  • stable foam heads,
  • consistent skimmate production.

Needle-wheel skimmers also perform well but can produce larger bubbles if the impeller becomes fouled or worn.

Air intake

Needle-wheel pumps often achieve higher air-to-water ratios in compact units.

Fine-bubble nozzles may require:

  • higher water pressure,
  • optimized air inlet,
  • or an assisted air supply

to match the same air throughput.

Thus, the hydraulic design is critical.

Water flow

Fine-bubble nozzles generally allow:

  • higher water flow,
  • lower hydraulic restriction,
  • suitability for larger skimmer bodies.

This makes them attractive for commercial aquaculture and large marine systems.

Maintenance

Fine-bubble nozzle

Maintenance typically involves:

  • soaking in vinegar or dilute acid to remove calcium,
  • cleaning the air inlet,
  • flushing the nozzle.

No impeller replacement is needed specifically for bubble generation.

Needle-wheel

Requires:

  • cleaning the impeller,
  • cleaning the volute,
  • inspecting the shaft,
  • occasional impeller replacement.

Energy consumption

This depends heavily on system design.

Needle-wheel skimmers:

  • typically use low-head pumps,
  • efficiently generate bubbles at modest pressures.

Fine-bubble nozzles:

  • may require more pump head,
  • but can offset this with lower mechanical losses and excellent bubble generation if the nozzle is highly efficient.

A poorly designed nozzle system can consume more energy than a needle-wheel skimmer, whereas a well-designed nozzle can be competitive.

Noise

Fine-bubble nozzle

Usually quieter because:

  • no high-speed impeller interacting with air,
  • less cavitation inside the pump,
  • simpler mechanical system.

The main sound is from the water flow and air intake.

Durability

Fine-bubble nozzle

Expected service life is very long because the nozzle has no moving parts. Stainless steel or ceramic nozzles are particularly durable.

Needle-wheel

The impeller assembly experiences mechanical wear and will eventually require replacement.

Scalability

Fine-bubble nozzles scale well from small systems to commercial installations because multiple nozzles can be added without changing the underlying principle.

Needle-wheel designs become increasingly complex as system size and air demand grow, often requiring multiple pumps.
