Another Ven X MM10 for DIY Protein Skimmer

In a high-intensity eel (Anguilla spp.) Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS), a protein skimmer (foam fractionator) is one of the most valuable water treatment components because eels produce large amounts of dissolved organic waste (especially mucus and proteins), while high feeding rates rapidly increase the organic load. When properly designed and integrated with mechanical filtration, biofiltration, oxygenation, and UV/ozone, a protein skimmer provides the following benefits:

1. Removes dissolved organic compounds (DOC) before decomposition

Continuously removes:

 * Fish mucus
 * Uneaten feed proteins
 * Dissolved amino acids
 * Lipids and oils
 * Fine suspended organic particles
* Prevents these compounds from breaking down into:

 * Ammonia
 * Nitrite
 * Carbon dioxide
 * Organic acids

2. Reduces ammonia production

Although the protein skimmer does **not directly remove ammonia**, it removes organic nitrogen before bacteria convert it into ammonia.

* Less nitrate accumulation
* Increased biofilter efficiency

This is particularly important in eel culture where feed conversion rates are high and biomass often exceeds **80–150 kg/m³**.

Eels naturally secrete large amounts of protective mucus.

Excess mucus can:

* Coat biofilter media
* Reduce oxygen transfer
* Promote bacterial growth

Protein skimmers are highly effective at removing mucus because it contains surfactant proteins that readily form stable foam.

4. Improves water clarity

Fine suspended organic particles are captured in the foam.

Many commercial RAS systems inject ozone directly into the protein skimmer, where:

* Foam removes oxidized organics.
* Residual ozone is safely destroyed before water returns to the culture tanks.

10. Reduces off-flavor compounds

Organic-rich systems favor microorganisms that produce:

* Geosmin
* 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB)

Reducing dissolved organics limits the growth of these organisms and lowers the accumulation of off-flavor compounds in eel flesh.
