MM05 Ven X Mili-Microbubbler in a high intensive nursery pond of Vannamei shrimps

In a high-intensity vannamei nursery pond, fine bubbles can be very useful as a supplement to conventional air diffusers which provide bulk oxygenation  while fine bubbles improve gas-transfer efficiency and water-column conditioning.

1. The biggest benefit: higher oxygen-transfer efficiency

A fine-bubble system produces a much larger gas–water interfacial area than coarse bubbles.

For example, if the same air volume is divided into much smaller bubbles:

* bubble surface area increases dramatically;
* bubbles remain suspended longer;
* oxygen has more opportunity to dissolve;
* less oxygen escapes directly to the atmosphere.

This is particularly useful in a nursery because shrimp biomass can increase rapidly while the pond's oxygen demand also increases.

A practical system can therefore use:

Blower → conventional diffusers for mixing + baseline aeration

and

**O₂/air → fine-bubble generator for high-efficiency supplemental oxygenation,

2. Helps eliminate DO stratification

In an intensive nursery pond, DO can be quite different between:

* surface and bottom;
* center and pond perimeter;
* feeding zones and non-feeding zones;
* daytime and early morning.

Fine bubbles distributed at strategic locations can create additional oxygen-transfer zones.

This is especially valuable when conventional diffusers are already operating near their practical capacity.

The objective isn't necessarily to push the whole pond to extremely high DO. Rather, it is to reduce low-DO pockets and stabilize DO throughout the water column.

3. Particularly valuable during feeding

After feeding, oxygen consumption increases because of:

shrimp respiration + feed metabolism + microbial decomposition + nitrification.

The fine-bubble system can be increased temporarily around the feeding period.

A useful control strategy is:

Normal period:
Air diffusers → continuous baseline aeration

30–60 min before feeding: Fine bubbles → increase

Feeding period:
Fine bubbles + diffusers → maximum supplemental oxygenation

Post-feeding
Maintain enhanced aeration for several hours, depending on DO response.

This can be more energy-efficient than running every aeration device at maximum capacity continuously.

4. Fine bubbles can help with suspended organic matter

This is an important secondary benefit in intensive nursery systems.

Very fine bubbles can attach to hydrophobic organic particles and help transport some material toward a collection point or foam fractionation/skimming system.

The potential chain is:

Uneaten feed / feces / microbial flocs

fine bubbles attach to some particles

particles become more buoyant

concentration at a collection zone

mechanical removal / skimming
