Reducing usage of air diffusers by fine bubbles in an intensive shrimp pond

In intensive shrimp ponds, nanobubbles can significantly reduce the operating time and energy consumption of root blowers, but they generally work best as a supplement rather than a complete replacement for conventional aeration.

Main Benefits of Nanobubbles

1. Higher Oxygen Transfer Efficiency

Traditional air diffusers produce bubbles typically 1–5 mm in diameter. Most rise quickly and escape before dissolving.

Nanobubbles (less than 200 nm) have:

* Extremely high surface area
* Very slow rise velocity
* Longer residence time in water

As a result:

* More oxygen dissolves into the water
* Less oxygen is wasted to the atmosphere
* Higher dissolved oxygen (DO) can be maintained with less blower runtime

Typical improvement:

* Oxygen transfer efficiency can be 2–5× higher than coarse bubble aeration, depending on system design.

---

2. Reduced Blower Energy Consumption

In many intensive shrimp ponds:

* Aeration accounts for 50–80% of electricity consumption.
* Root blowers often run 24 hours in a day.

With a properly designed nanobubble oxygenation system:

* Night-time blower operation can often be reduced.
* Some diffuser zones can be operated intermittently.
* Total aeration energy may decrease by 20–50%.

Actual savings depend on biomass and feeding rate.

---

3. Better Oxygen Distribution

Diffusers create oxygen-rich zones near the aerator.

Nanobubbles:

* Remain suspended throughout the pond
* Distribute oxygen more evenly
* Reduce low-DO "dead zones"

This is particularly useful in:

* HDPE-lined ponds
* Circular ponds
* Biofloc systems
* Intensive shrimp culture ( more than 250 shrimp/m²)

---

4. Improved Bottom Conditions

Nanobubbles can improve oxidation near the pond bottom:

* Faster decomposition of organic waste
* Lower accumulation of sludge
* Reduced hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)
* Reduced ammonia stress

This can indirectly reduce the need for emergency aeration.

---

 5. Better Feed Conversion and Growth

When DO remains consistently above 5–6 mg/L:

* Shrimp eat more actively
* Feed conversion ratio (FCR) improves
* Stress decreases
* Survival often increases

Many farms report:

* 5–15% better growth rates
* Lower FCR by 0.05–0.15 points

---

 6. Enhanced Biofloc and Nitrification

Nanobubbles help aerobic bacteria by maintaining oxygen throughout the water column.

Benefits:

* More stable biofloc
* Better ammonia conversion
* Lower nitrite accumulation

This is particularly valuable in super-intensive systems.

---

For ponds stocked at:
* 200–400 shrimp/m²
* Biomass 4–8 kg/m³

A good approach is:

1. Keep 50–70% of the existing aeration capacity.
2. Install an oxygen nanobubble generator.
3. Operate nanobubbles continuously.
4. Run root blowers mainly:

  * At night
  * During peak feeding
  * During cloudy weather

This often provides the best balance between:

* Oxygen stability
* Water movement
* Energy savings
